And Then There Were Three

We welcomed William James Kolinsky into the world on December 27, 2014 at 7:28pm. He’s a tall skinny guy just like Dad at 6 lbs 12 oz and 21 inches long. I was pretty shocked when I went into labour almost two weeks early, the day after a busy boxing day shopping spree. I don’t know what this says about his thoughts on being my shopping sidekick in the future!

We had planned to get really organized that day finalizing the nursery, cleaning the flat and making a few things to put in the freezer.  But at about 4:30 am my water broke and we found ourselves at the hospital around 10:30 am. It’s a good thing our “birth plan” was to have no plan, because nothing really went as expected!  As it turned out, the birth centre was closed because all the staff was working in the labour ward due to staff shortages over the Holidays and I ended up needing a C-section. But what’s important is that we have a healthy little boy to call our own, and I am on the mend.

Mike was lucky enough to get two weeks off work and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together as a family. We had quite a few sleepless nights as William likes to sleep all day and is restless at night, but I think this is quite common with babies. As new parents, we had a lot of moments wondering if the things he was doing were normal and everything was ok. We called home a lot and sent a lot of messages and photos to ask questions. (Sorry to those that got photos of poopy diapers and goopy eyes!) But we also got to go for some nice walks and have lots of snuggle time.

We had three home visits from a community midwife and one visit from a health visitor, so that always provided a chance to ask questions and share any concerns that we had. It was nice because it was like a second mom or aunt visiting that has a lot of experience and can reassure you that everything is ok. Speaking of Mom’s, my parents are coming to visit in one week and I am so excited! I can’t wait for them to meet William and show them around London. I have a lot of things planned for us to do, so hopefully he still falls asleep the moment we take him for a walk in his bassinet.

I am really enjoying motherhood so far, even when it’s 4 am and it feels like I have been feeding him for hours! He is so precious and I am determined to soak it all in because I know how fast time will fly before he’s not so little anymore!  We are so thankful for the support and well wishes from family and friends near and far.  And I am thankful for Mike who has proven to be an amazing Dad so far.  I can’t wait to continue our adventure as a family of three.

  1. Oh Andrea, he’s so beautiful! And you look fantastic for just having had a baby! That’s great that your parents are coming for a visit so soon. I imagine it’s a bit more difficult being away, especially with the time change. I remember having SO many questions ALL the time too. It’s nice you are already getting out, it took me quite a few weeks after my c-section to want to go anywhere, but then again, it was early March and soooo cold here. Enjoy these early weeks – I can say, from experience, that they do go way too fast. I remember feeling like all I did was nurse all day (because, I did!!), and now, the nursing sessions are so quick and not nearly as often and that’s a little sad. Hold little William as much as you want and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! 🙂

    1. Thanks Brie! I’m making a point to treasure all my nursing sessions with him. A friend told me some of her most precious memories were at night when she was up with her baby feeding him, and I agree.

  2. I can hardly wait to hold him!! He looks so fair in colouring and when I see you and Mike, I realize that Mike is very fair too. It looks like you are enjoying your time with him and that is great. We will see you in a few sleeps.

    1. Thanks Carrie! They appear to be dark blue, but I thought most babies have a certain eye color and then it changes…
